DESCRIPTION: Height up to 80cm. A native downy perennial plant that has rounded basal leaves that are 3-6 pinnate whereas the stem leaves are trifoliate. The nodding flowers are borne at the end of the long upright stems and have pinkish-orange petals almost enclosed in the prominent purple sepals. The roots smell of clove oil. DISTRIBUTION: Widespread and common throughout except south-west England. HABITAT: Has a fondness for marshy ground, riversides, pond margins and damp woodland edges. FLOWERING TIME: May to August.
